About Me

I am a composer, theorist, budding improviser, and failed former philosopher who loves to think about how music works. On this site you can listen to my music, learn what I think makes music sound good, find links to writing both technical and non, download jazz transcriptions, and check out various pieces of software I have written. My last CD was called Fools and Angels and contains four eclectic pieces for vocals, live instruments, and electronics. I have been collecting a number of recordings since then, and plan to release some more music in the near future.

Recent Work

I have just finished a second book, Tonality: An Owner's Manual, that proposes a new, hierarchical, and geometrical model of musical stucture. One interesting outgrowth is the musical programming language arca. This line of thinking has also led me to contemplate a third book about category theory and music.

I am currently doing a lot of improvisation, using various technological tools that allow for spontaneous harmonic coordination, for instance by sending notation through the internet. Contact me if you want to improvise!

Other recent work focuses on the interaction between music theory and composition; I am developing a number of games, compositional utilities, and electronic instruments, many of which involve geometry in some way.
